"If
someone denied us our rights we could go and bring them before a court of
law. But in the old church, if
somebody denied us our rights, we had to take it to Jesus."
Fr. Moses Berry
I was talking with a friend about God's Garden when he lit up and said I had to read, Same Kind of Different as Me. I got it a few days later and read it in just a few sittings. It was a moving book that was difficult to put down. I highly recommend it!
My friend recommended it because of it similarities to God's Garden. As I read, I began to see something of a slavery continuum in my mind.
• Auction Block Slavery - Slaves had no choice, they were bought and sold like property.
• Share Croppin' - Former slaves had the illusion of freedom and choice, but were held captive by debt, poverty and ignorance by the gifts of the plantation owner.
• Modern Day Slavery - Educated Americans with the illusion of freedom and choice, but we're still held captive by debt, poverty and ignorance by the "low introductory interest rates" of banks and our desires.
Now, having said that, I'm not a conspiracy theorist. However, I thought it ironic that as "enlightened" as we think we are today, we are still held captive. There is still a man who owns the "store" where we buy our goods on credit and "he" has convinced us that we deserve a bigger house, car, etc. with little ability to repay. But before we blame it on "the man" I would propose that we are all slaves in one form or another on any number of levels. The real question is, can we name our master?
Disclaimer: I'm no expert on slavery, these are just my thoughts and observations. What do you think?
